Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing to replace the Bridge on Mayfield Road over U.S. 29 Business / U.S. 29 Bypass in Ruffin. The primary objective of this project is to replace a structurally deficient two-lane bridge built in 1970.  Structurally deficient does not mean the bridge is unsafe.  It means that it is in relatively poor condition, and requires significant maintenance to remain in operation Replacement of this bridge will enhance safety and operational efficiency.

The proposed replacement structure would be a modern two-lane, fixed-span bridge providing vertical clearance over the U.S. 29 Bypass in Rockingham County.

This project is included in the N.C. Department Of Transportation Structures Management Unit – 5 Year Bridge Program.

The existing bridge will be temporarily closed during construction but a designated detour route will be established to facilitate the continuous flow of traffic.

The detour route uses:

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
