Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing to close the at-grade railroad crossing on Trinity Road and replace the closed crossing with a vehicular bridge over the North Carolina Rail Road (NCRR). The project is located at the intersection of Trinity Road and E. Chatham Street in Cary. The purpose of the project is to improve safety at the Trinity Road railroad crossing by eliminating the potential for train and automobile crashes.

Project Highlights

The proposed cross-section of Trinity Road will include four travel lanes, a median, curb and gutter, a 2 foot bike lane and a 5 foot sidewalk on the eastern side of the road.

The project would:

  • Replace the railroad crossing with a bridge carrying Trinity Road over E. Chatham Street
  • Shift the road slightly to the east
  • Extend Trinity Road to the south across E. Chatham Street connecting it to the existing driveways at WakeMed Soccer Park

Project History

In 2016, The Raleigh-Cary Traffic Separation Study thoroughly assessed the at grade crossings of the NCRR between Cary and Raleigh. Within the study area, there have been two train-vehicular crashes over the past three decades. With increased frequencies there were possibilities of this issue getting worse. In response to the safety concerns, the study recommended the closure of the at grade crossing on Trinity Road and constructing a vehicular bridge to carry Trinity Road over the NCRR.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
