Project Overview
The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to construct a roundabout at the intersection of N.C. 48 and N.C. 4 along with improvements along N.C. 4 in Battleboro in Nash County.
The purpose of the project is to improve traffic flow and safety at the N.C. 48 and N.C. 4 intersection and improvements proposed include:
Convert the existing N.C. 48/N.C. 4 signalized intersection to a roundabout.
Construct a turnaround bulb on the north side of N.C. 4 across from McLane Road, approximately 0.4 miles east of N.C. 48.
Repave N.C. 4 within the project limits.
Construct sidewalks around the proposed roundabout and on both sides of N.C. 4.
Construct bus pads on N.C. 4 at three existing Tar River Transit stops.
Temporary construction easements will be needed to construct the roundabout, sidewalks, and turnaround bulb. Traffic will be maintained on the existing roadway during construction. Construction is scheduled to begin Fall 2026 and will last about 18 months.
Initial plans included a truck turnaround bulb on N.C. 48 south of Corporation Parkway, but after further investigations, it was determined there was not much need for it, so it was removed from the plans.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
