Project Overview
The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to replace the bridge on Curtis Bridge Road (S.R. 1185) over the Yadkin River in Wilkesboro, Wilkes County. The existing bridge was constructed in 1952 and is considered structurally deficient due to substructure condition. The bridge also lacks pedestrian and bicycle accommodations. Structurally deficient does not mean that the bridge is unsafe, it indicates that portions of the bridge are in poor condition and in need of significant maintenance. The proposed bridge will include two 11-foot lanes (one in each direction) and a 10-foot multi-use path for pedestrians and bicycles on the south side of the bridge. The multi-use path will be separated from the travel lanes by a raised concrete divider as shown below in the typical sections.
Inclusion of the multi-use path is subject to participation of the local municipality.
The project proposes to replace the bridge in its current location and offsite detour will be used during construction. The proposed vehicular detour will divert traffic from Curtis Bridge Road onto U.S. 421 during construction.
In 2023, NCDOT Highway Division 11 secured a federal grant to replace this bridge. The project is currently in the planning and design stage.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
