Project Highlights

NCDOT Project BR-0015 proposes to replace the bridges on U.S. 29 / U.S. 70 over W. 5th Avenue (S.R. 1192) in Lexington.  The project will remove the two existing bridges and replace them with one new bridge in their existing location. The proposed bridge will include:

  • Two 12-foot travel lanes
  • A 12-foot turn lane (onto off ramps) in each direction
  • 6-foot paved outside shoulders
  • The bridge includes a 22-foot paved median - 10 foot each directon separated by a 2-foot concrete barrier.

The replacement bridge will be constructed using phased construction. Traffic will utilize crossovers constructed with temporary pavement in the existing medians, and 2-way traffic will travel on an existing bridge in stage 1 prior to demolishing the existing bridge in stage 2.

Other associated proposed roadway improvements along U.S. 29 / U.S. 70 will include:

  • Pavement resurfacing
  • Widening the median paved shoulders to 10 feet with a 2-foot concrete median barrier
  • Lengthening the acceleration and deceleration lanes for ramps within the U.S. 29 / U.S. 70 - W. 5th Avenue interchange.
  • The existing ramps in the northeast quadrant of the interchange will remain in their current location with some resurfacing. The existing ramps in the northwest quadrant of the interchange at Murphy Drive will be removed.

The existing loop ramp and adjacent ramp in the southwest quadrant of the interchange will be realigned to accommodate an improved 25 mile per hour design speed for the loop ramp and 45 mile per hour design speed for the adjacent ramp.

West 5th Avenue

The project will include improvements for W. 5th Avenue from the ramp terminal intersection west of the bridges to the National Blvd intersection. In this area, W. 5th Avenue will be upgraded to include:

  • Two 12-foot travel lanes
  • A 12-foot center turn lane
  • 4-foot paved shoulders in each direction
  • Curb and gutter
  • Under the proposed bridge, a minimum 10-foot berm on each side of the road will provide space for a future sidewalk, if needed.

Murphy Drive

The project will include improvements for Murphy Drive from West 5th Avenue to just beyond Forest Rose Drive.  In this area, with the removal of the existing exit from U.S. 29/70, the intersection with W. 5th Avenue will be reconstructed and the roadway realigned and reconnected to Murphy Drive just beyond Forest Rose Drive.

The project is state-funded, additional right of way will be necessary, and temporary construction easements will be utilized as needed.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
