Project Overview

The North Carolina Department of Transportation proposes to replace culverts along West Corbett Avenue, east of the West Shore Drive intersection in the southeastern area of Swansboro.

Within the project area, West Corbett Avenue currently contains two lanes in each direction and a center turn lane. Curb and gutter exists along each side of the roadway with a sidewalk along the south side. The speed limit is 35 miles per hour (mph).

The culvert replacement is proposed to replace the existing undersized culvert that is unable to handle the amount of water that needs to pass through for Ward Creek, a small tributary to the White Oak River.  Ward Creek flows under West Corbett Avenue (N.C. 24) roughly 1/2 mile upstream from the confluence with the White Oak River. The project proposes to replace the two 30-inch culverts under the road with two 60-inch culverts.

Project Highlights

This project will be constructed in phases resulting in an on-site detour. The traffic control pattern will be revised during construction, shifting traffic from one side of the roadway to the opposite side. This project will be constructed off seasonal peak during a 3-month period to reduce impacts on the local community.

The existing conditions of this study area include a continuous sidewalk on the south side of West Corbett Avenue and an intermittent sidewalk on the north side of West Corbett Avenue within the vicinity of the culvert replacement project. These existing conditions will remain in place without impact.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
