Project Highlights

The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing to replace Bridge 146 over Crabtree Creek in Raleigh, Wake County. The existing bridge on U.S. 401 (Capital Boulevard) is 201 feet in length and was built in 1963. While safe for travel, the bridge is reaching the end of its useful life. The proposed project is needed to provide a safer, more durable structure. The new bridge will be built in the same location as the existing bridge and will be approximately 210 feet long with six 12-foot lanes (three in each direction), raised concrete median, and curb and gutter with a sidewalk (northbound) and a 10-foot multi-use path (southbound). The multi-use path will be separated from traffic by a raised concrete barrier.

The bridge will be replaced in place using a staged construction process. Traffic will be maintained throughout construction. There will be no detour. Staged construction will be used to keep Capital Boulevard open during the bridge replacement process. (See Bridge Phasing graphic). Construction is anticipated to take approximately 2 years.

The Crabtree Creek trail greenway is an existing greenway that travels under the existing bridge. The greenway will remain open during construction via an at-grade detour across Capital Boulevard. (See Greenway Detour Phasing maps)

A 10-foot multi-use path will be added to the bridge and tie into the greenway near Ratchford Drive.

One business is anticipated to be relocated.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
