Project Highlights

The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to replace the bridge on Sheppard Mill Road (S.R. 1674) over the Dan River in Stokes County.  The existing bridge was constructed in 1958 and has been identified for replacement by NCDOT’s Structures Management Unit.

The project will remove the existing bridge and replace with a new bridge adjacent to the existing bridge. The proposed bridge will include:

  • Two 14-foot travel lanes
  • The two travel lanes will accommodate bicycle traffic
  • Approximately 5-foot sidewalks will be included on both sides

The new bridge will be constructed south of the existing bridge to maintain traffic during construction. The new bridge will be constructed in stages, allowing traffic to continue to use the existing bridge until a portion of the new bridge is completed. Following completion of the first phase of the new bridge, traffic will be shifted to the new bridge and the old bridge will be removed while the new bridge is being completed.

The purpose of the proposed project is to replace a structurally deficient bridge. The fact that a bridge is "structurally deficient" does not imply that it is unsafe. It means the bridge must be monitored, inspected and repaired/replaced at an appropriate time to maintain its structural integrity.

The proposed project will require the acquisition of a small amount of property from Moratock Park. NCDOT is working with park management to replace the affected property and mitigate any other impacts to the park.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
