P-5707: Rogers Road Grade Separation - Wake Forest
NCDOT proposes to replace an at-grade rail crossing on Rogers Road with a bridge over the CSX S-line railroad in Wake Forest.
Interactive Study Area Map:
Project Overview
The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to construct a bridge on Rogers Road (S.R. 2052) over the CSX S-line railroad in the same location as the existing at-grade rail crossing. Heritage Branch Road would be rerouted from the existing intersection with Rogers Road to tie in with Capital Creek Drive, approximately 0.24 mile to the east of the existing intersection.
The proposed bridge would include:
- two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction
- one 12-foot left turn only lane
- a five and a half-foot concrete sidewalk on both sides
The bridge approaches would include a 5-foot concrete sidewalk on both sides of the roadway with a 4-foot buffer from traffic.
The existing driveway to Wake Forest Heritage Business Park West (north of the Heritage Branch Road and Rogers Road intersection) would be rerouted to a new intersection approximately 300 feet to the east.
Project History
This project was studied under the Southeast High-Speed Rail (SEHSR) project in the early 2000s. The initial environmental analysis and documentation is covered under the Federal Railroad Administration’s 2015 Final Environmental Impact Statement and 2017 Record of Decision (ROD). The design of project documented in the 2017 ROD included the rerouting of Heritage Branch Road from the existing intersection with Rogers Road approximately 540 feet to the east.
Since the time of the ROD, private commercial and residential developments have occurred in the project study area. The design of the Heritage Branch Road reroute has been updated to incorporate this new development. In addition, the Rogers Road grade separation design has been further refined.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
