Project Overview

The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing to replace the bridge on West Boulevard (NC 160) over the Norfolk Southern Railroad in Mecklenburg County. The purpose of the project is to replace the structurally deficient bridge and upgrade sidewalks.

Project Highlights

During construction, the bridge will be closed including the sidewalks, which may require a 3-mile detour to access the other side of the bridge. The existing bridge is a four (4)-lane roadway with sidewalk on each side.

The project would provide:

  • One 11-foot inside lane and one 13-foot outside lane in each direction, separated by a 4-foot monolithic island.

  • 10-foot multi-use path on the north side and 7.5-foot sidewalk on the south side of the bridge.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS

Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
