Project Highlights
The N.C. Department of Transportation is proposing to replace the bridge on U.S. 76 (Causeway Drive) and the two bridges and on U.S. 74 (West Salisbury Street) in Wrightsville Beach.
The project will remove the existing bridges and replace each with a new bridge adjacent to the existing. The proposed bridges will include the following design elements:
U.S. 76 (Causeway Drive) crossing Banks Channel
- three (3) 11-ft lanes
- two (2) eastbound lanes traveling to the island
- one (1) westbound lane leaving the island
- 10-ft multi-use path on the north side of the bridge
- two (2) 6-ft bike lanes
Bridges along U.S. 74 (W. Salisbury Street) crossing Lees Cut and Banks Channel
- two (2) 12-ft lanes (one lane in each direction)
- 12-ft multi-use path on the south side of the bridge
- two (2) 6-ft bike lanes.
Construction will begin with the two bidges along U.S. 74 (W. Salisbury Street). These bridges will be closed for the duration of construction which is anticipated to be approximately 24 months for each bridge. The construction type, length of the bridge, right of way, and utilities are all factors which can affect the construction duration. An off-site detour will be provided for vehicles and pedestrians utilizing Causeway Drive.
Once bridge construction has been completed for the two bridges along U.S. 74 (W. Salisbury Street), construction of the bridge along U.S. 76 (Causeway Drive) crossing Banks Channel will begin. The bridge will be closed for approximately 24 months while the new bridge is being constructed. An off-site detour will be provided for vehicles and pedestrians utilizing Salisbury Street.
The purpose of the project is to replace the aging structures thereby improving connectivity and providing a long-term, safe, and efficient multi-modal crossing of the Banks Channel.
