Project Overview

NCDOT is proposing improvements along Oakwoods Road between U.S. 421 and Sunset Drive.

As proposed, the project would:

  • construct two, single-lane roundabouts on Oakwoods Road,
    • one at the Call Street intersection
    • one at the U.S. 421 and Oakwoods Road intersection.
  • add sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides of Oakwoods Road from U.S. 421 to Call Street.
  • construct a shared-use-path from Call Street to Sunset Drive where it will tie in to a future shared-use-path being constructed under another NCDOT STIP Project (STIP B-4676).

The proposed typical section on Oakwoods Road from U.S. 421 to Call Street will be a two-lane, median divided road. Beyond Call Street, Oakwoods Road will remain a two-lane, undivided road.  Access to Stratford Road from Oakwoods Road will be removed.

The project is needed to improve traffic flow and safety and is designed to provide modernization, additional capacity, and access management for the Oakwoods Road corridor. The project will use phased construction to reduce traffic disruption. Road closures are anticipated to occur during roundabout construction, at which times an off‐site detour will be provided.

Project History

In 2018, STIP Project R-5772 was initiated as a widening project that proposed widening Oakwoods Road to four lanes from South Bridge Street to East Main Street. In November 2018, a public meeting was held in Wilkesboro to gather input from local officials and residents in the surrounding area. Feedback received at the public meeting, which indicated that the residents of Wilkesboro did not want Oakwoods Road widened, informed the development of the preferred alternative. Currently, STIP Project R-5772 no longer proposes to widen Oakwoods Road, but instead proposes to construct upgrades that will improve the safety and traffic flow along the corridor.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road

project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed. The following information explains right

of way acquisition and answers questions about the process.
