U-5892: Battleground
U-5892: Battleground
Preliminary Engineering Activities for this project
have resumed.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
This project proposes to widen approximately 1.5 miles of U.S. 220 (Battleground Avenue) from north of Westridge Road to the eastbound I-840 ramps in Greensboro.
The existing roadway will be upgraded to a 6-lane, median-divided road with a 5-foot wide sidewalk on both sides. Traditional intersections are proposed at New Garden Road, Brassfield Road, and Cotswold Avenue. Additional median breaks are proposed to allow left-turns at several other intersections.
The purpose of this project is to address congestion issues through 2040, and to improve safety along Battleground Avenue. Widening the road will improve mobility along the corridor and is consistent with previous City transportation plans and the Greensboro Urban Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) Comprehensive Transportation Plan (June 2010) and Long-Range Transportation Plan. Traffic operations are expected to continue to worsen as traffic volumes increase and improvements are needed to accommodate these increases. Past crash rates are higher than statewide average crash rates for similar roads (576.13 vs. 341.85 crashes per million vehicle miles traveled). Safety is a high priority for the City of Greensboro as part of their Vision Zero strategy. A median reduces potential conflicts between vehicles.

RESOURCES FOR PROPERTY OWNERS
Although the N.C. Department of Transportation works to minimize the number of homes and businesses displaced by a road project, it is inevitable, in many cases, that a certain amount of private property is needed.
