The N.C. Department of Transportation proposes to upgrade N.C. 50 (Benson Road) north of Timber Drive in Garner.

Project Overview
State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) Project No. HL-0008C proposes extending an existing right turn lane on northbound N.C. 50 (Benson Road). The project begins at the commercial driveway for the State Employees Credit Union, north of Timber Drive, and connects to the existing right turn lane beginning just south of New Rand Extension, a distance of approximately 300 feet. A sidewalk will also be added on the east side of N.C. 50 between Timber Drive and New Rand Extension.
In 2019, NCDOT recorded an Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT) volume of 15,000 vehicles per day (vpd) on N.C. 50 north of Timber Drive and 20,500 vpd south of Timber Drive. The existing intersection of N.C. 50 and Timber Drive experiences congestion due to a bottleneck in the project area, north of the intersection along N.C. 50.
An AADT of 15,000 cannot be supported on a two-lane road without causing delays. Connecting these turn lanes will provide a second northbound lane on N.C. 50 between Timber Drive and New Rand Extension, which will reduce traffic queues on N.C. 50.
History
The Strategic Transportation Investments (STI) law includes a provision for a funding allocation to local governments based on funding contributed by the local government to transportation projects or revenue from tolling. This bonus allocation can be used to fund the construction of other eligible highway projects.
Early in 2020, the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO) received notice from NCDOT that there would be a bonus allocation to CAMPO from the N.C. 540 (toll road) project. This project, on N.C. 50, was one of several selected by CAMPO for the bonus allocation funding. NCDOT began project development work for the project in early 2021.
